When on Sunday, June 19, 2022, around three quarter past nine in the evening, Bàsquet Girona defeated Estudiantes in Fontajau and achieved promotion to the ACB league, Girona’s basketball recovered a category, in which up to fourteen years earlier he had played during twenty consecutive seasons. At the same time, Girona as a city regained its place in the elite country men's basketball.
When, a couple of hours later, Girona FC defeated Tenerife at home, in the second leg of the second promotion play-off, the club from Montilivi won the right to return to the First Division of the world of football and the city was once again among the only twenty in the whole of Spain that in the 22/23 season would enjoy a place in one of the best leagues in the world.
The two milestones are truly meritorious at the level of each club, but even more so at the level of the city, considering that beyond football and men's basketball, the world of basketball is also represented at the highest level level in the women's category for Uni Girona and that the same happens with Girona CH in roller hockey.
With the sole exception of Barcelona, which bases its sporting achievements on the mighty Barça, no other Spanish city has the potential of four teams playing at the highest level.
This is what makes this season 22/23, a historic campaign for the city and the Girona counties, but also unique within state sport, even though other capitals have hundreds of thousands more inhabitants.
Double merit and more than ever, Girona pride!!!
